Crown Lengthening

It is no secret that dentists are committed to saving teeth. This procedure is used to both save a tooth as well as an adjunct to more esthetic outcome in cosmetic restorations.

Cavities or fractured teeth well below the gumline (gingiva) create a questionable outcome for the final restoration whether a simple filling or a crown. Therefore, removing a small amount of gingiva and sometimes bone, better known as crown lengthening becomes necessay to gain access to the decay for the restoration. In the event a tooth fractures below the gingiva this procedure is implimented to expose more sound tooth structure for a crown to hold and seal after placement.

When it comes to cosmetic dentistry, crown lengthening is a routine surgical procedure, that allows us to either lengthen short teeth (there is a standard width:length ratio that should always be maintained), rid the look of a "gummy smile" or simply to restore a more symetric gingival archtecture resulting in a more harmonius smile.
